THE HORROR'S BRING THEIR 'V' TOUR TO GLASGOW'S QMU AS PART OF THEIR UK HEADLINE TOUR
The Southend-formed quintet have unleashed their dark garage-rock with psychedelia and electro, and fresh off their recent support slot with Depeche Mode ,the band, with barely a word jumped straight into their first song without any hesitation. The lights were dim, the room at Queen Margaret Union was almost pitch black. The five piece band immediately filled the room with the incredible sound that came from them playing. They appeared very mysterious as the room was so dark with only beams from the stage lights coming through.
The venue was almost sold out with very little room to move within the crowd. The band played songs from their latest release - V - and some from their older collection of songs as well. They very rarely communicated with the crowd with actual words. The front man would grab the mic stand and extend it towards the crowd for them to grab, there wasn’t much other interaction with the crowd apart from that, this kept in line with there mysterious vibe. There was only one support band on before then which matched their style of song, they were three piece band that were instrumental, there was very few vocals involved in and again didn’t interact with the crowd.
The band blasted through the set and the songs played, just transitioned into one another, there is no talk the crowd , they just moved through song by song. At points in the performance you couldn't see the band at all due to the amount of smoke on the stage and due to the lack of lighting.
You could make out silhouettes of the bands at times during this period. Looking at the stage eyes are immediately drawn to the pyramid at the right of the stage, this is a Tom Furse’s bespoke 80s style modulator, commissioned by XL boss Richard Russell.
All the vocals were very strong and the band put on a good performance of all the latest and old songs. Old and new fans throughly enjoyed the gig as they were all signing and dancing along with the band.
As said it was certainly worth going to and it was a great performance and night. The Horrors were vocally and instrumentally strong and I would certainly go to see them again. The Horrors has always been able to demonstrate the talents in live performance and that is why I will always come back. If tonight’s performance of the new songs is an indication of the band's direction, I expect that I we will be hearing a lot more from them in bigger venues.
