2018'S BRITS CRITICS CHOICE WINNER 'JORJA SMITH' PERFORMS TO SOLD-OUT AUDIENCE AT EDNBURGH'S LIQUID ROOMS
After just two years since the release of her first track Blue Lights on SoundCloud, Jorja Smith sells out Edinburgh’s The Liquid Room on the opening night of her sell out UK tour. The now twenty-year-old wrote the track as part of a school project before it was discovered by Drake, who played it on his Ovo Sound Radio ahead of having Smith support him on his European tour 2017.
Smith and her band walked onto the intimately dressed and won over the Edinburgh crowd within the first beat of the opening song Beautiful Little Fools. Held perfectly between the warm lights and home-like lampshades that hung from the ceiling, the soulful musicians blended together flawlessly. The sold out venue of fans sing word-for-word along with Smith, especially when her popular single Where Did I Go? is played.
The first class band support her effortless vocals excellently; the keys player juggling his three different keyboards with ease and a very nice guitar solo in Something In The Way – choppy and full of feel.
A handful of new original songs are also shared by Smith, which are to be on her upcoming album. One song, Tomorrow, begins with sampled vocal harmonies and Smith before the full band kick in with a Bond-esque theme sound. Goodbye, written for her friend, was stunningly performed by just Smith accompanied only by clean electric-guitar. The performance left the crowd silent, mesmerised by what they’d just experienced. She laughs and humbly asks, “Why are you all so quiet?”.
Despite winning this year's Brit Awards Critics Choice Award, Jorja Smith has no date set for the promised debut album, it’s safe to expect it will be major success when it’s finally released if her set in The Liquid Room is anything to judge it off.
