The Glasgow rain didn’t stop the crowd coming out in force for Courtney Barnett’s headline show at the famous Barrowland Ballroom on Saturday night. Even walking to the venue you could tell something special was going on, with painted portraits of the singer dotted around the surrounding streets. The crowd was a mix of old and young, showing the diverse range of all types that Barnett’s music is able to reach.
The Aussie opened with ‘Hopelessness’, the opener from her new album Tell Me How Your Really Feel, released only a few weeks ago. It set the night off with a moody tone, having Barnett and her backing band lit from behind by red flood lights, leaving them as silhouettes from the crowds perspective. Barnett continued to play the new LP in full order much to the audience’s enjoyment, with heavy participation throughout. This gave the optimal listening experience for her fans, as everyone would have a different favourite from the record. Nothing will be missed by Barnett.
As the night went on, the Grammy nominated artist produced more and more from her back catalogue of tunes, with an equal spread between older and new. Barnett is well known for delivering her witty lyrics with a deadpan style with a mellow grunge backing. Her voice travelled round the famous ballroom as if it was home, it was the perfect venue for the laidback mood being projected by Barnett and her band. Her music gives her fans an escape while humouring them.
