WHENYOUNG // THINK TANK?, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
WHENYOUNG PERFORM INTIMATE SHOW AT NEWCASTLE’S THINK TANK?
I have been to gigs where I come out saying that was amazing and then there’s a few where I come out and actually don’t remember a thing because it was THAT amazing and I lived because living in the actual moment takes over so it was lucky that I had a few friends at whenyoung’s headliner at Newcastle’s Think Tank who recorded snippets for social media triggering moments here and there.
The crowd were somewhat playing it cool that even when the whenyoung voiceover starts and all band members enter the stage they are pretty chilled but then the opening bars to Pretty Pure kicks off and it’s like a lightning bolt shot through the crowd as literally every body starts jumping and they all sing along word perfect, with the hard cores donning their whenyoung tee’s squashed at the front and one fan mingling in the middle wearing a boiler suit that the band heavily wore on their last tour. Gone are those boiler suits as Aoife and Niall along with touring bassist Matt are smartly dressed and Drew is wearing a green Grenfell: Never Forget tee that a fan brought along on the night in recognition of their song The Others, which was inspired by the events of Grenfell Tower. This song comes towards the end of the set and gets an amazing reception. In fact the energy from the band and the audience never wavers even when the slower songs like A Labour Of Love, Blow Up The World and Something Sweet are performed they get amazing sing-alongs and hands in the air moments.
Emotions are literally everywhere on this night. A night with whenyoung is a night to complete lose yourself in the music — the music just gets inside you and the lyrics beat on your heart as you shout-sing along with the band especially the words, ”You're not living, you're just existing. Sweet temptation, no use resisting,” with Given Up but to end the night with Never Let Go is the perfect anthem for sure as you really feel the power of Aoife as she belts out the ‘ah ah ah’ bits of the song. Please note there was no pun intended when writing about Aoife’s vocals and her namesake but it is such a fitting name for a band member in whenyoung.
